How SkanSure decides

This page explains how SkanSure turns a product record into the results you see. It describes the method only — it is not medical advice and it does not issue religious rulings.

One scan, four checks

One scan checks four things, in this order:

  1. Gluten
  2. Halal
  3. Your allergens
  4. Calories & nutrition — facts only, never a judgement

Where the data comes from

Product data comes from Open Food Facts, a crowdsourced product database, under the Open Database License (ODbL).

Open Food Facts is always named on every result card, with the record’s last-updated date.

Crowdsourced data can be wrong or out of date, and recipes change. That is why SkanSure shows where a result came from and when the record was last updated.

1. Gluten

Gluten-Free

The product carries a gluten-free / no-gluten label, OR it has a complete ingredient list with no gluten found.

Contains Gluten

A gluten allergen is declared, or a gluten ingredient is found. The ingredient is named.

Unknown — check the label

The data is thin or contradictory, so SkanSure does not decide.

If the data shows gluten traces (“may contain”), a result is never shown as simply Gluten-Free — traces always downgrade it.

2. Halal

Certified Halal

Shown only when a recognized certifier is named, for example HMA or IFANCA. SkanSure reports certifications; it never issues religious rulings.

No haram ingredients found — not certified

A complete ingredient list was screened and nothing was found. This is not a certification.

Doubtful

An ingredient of unstated origin, such as gelatin, or meat with no certification. An uncertified meat product can never be cleared by ingredient screening alone.

Contains haram ingredient

For example pork, alcohol, or carmine / E120. The ingredient is named.

Unknown

There isn’t enough data to decide.

3. Your allergens

Allergens are checked against your own profile, built from Health Canada’s priority allergen list.

SkanSure checks declared allergens, “may contain” traces, and ingredient-list matches.

A “strict traces” setting treats “may contain” as contains.

If a record has no allergen data, the app says so. It never says “allergen-free.”

4. Calories & nutrition

SkanSure shows per-serving facts (when known) and per-100 g facts from the product record, with the source and date.

Implausible values are treated as missing, never polished.

SkanSure gives no diet advice and sets no targets.

The standing rule: when the data isn’t good enough, SkanSure says “Unknown” instead of guessing. A wrong “safe” is the worst outcome this app can produce.

Disclaimer

SkanSure shows dietary label information only. It is not medical advice and does not diagnose or treat any condition.

Always check the physical label on the product, and talk to your doctor or dietitian about medical questions.

For religious questions, consult a scholar or certifying body you trust.
